Did you know that it takes around 260 days or 8.5 months for water to travel through Windermere?
Take a canoe trip with freshwater ecologist Dr Ellie Mackay and learn about Windermere’s glacial origins, what the lake’s mud tells us about its past environments, and the effect of temperature on the lake’s water structure and how this affects its habitat.
Explore what’s growing in the lake, discover who’s eating what, and learn about the lake’s top predators – most notably the rare arctic charr.
And as Windermere continues to make the news due to the algal blooms, Ellie will outline the main stressors on the lake and the impacts of climate change.
Be prepared to spend around an hour on the water paddling a Canadian canoe. Please make sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear you don’t mind getting wet. All specialist equipment including buoyancy aids will be provided.
